Rules for Nationwide Health Data Interoperability

United States Core Data for Interoperability

On May 1, 2020 the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC), responsible for creating policy that governs national health IT adoption and interoperability, published its 21st Century Cures Act final rule in the Federal Register. At their core, the latest rules aim to enable people to use applications to retrieve their health records directly from their medical providers and put the patient in control regarding access to and exchange of their information. In doing so, the latest rules make sweeping changes to the way that EHR vendors, payers, providers and other impacted parties operate with regards to patient information.

In this Pivot Point Perspective, we highlight:

  1. Details of the United States Core Data for Interoperability (USCDI) selected as the national standard for health data that need to be exchanged via APIs
  2. Key terms that will impact the current process of information access and exchange
  3. United States Core Data for Interoperability minimum set of data classes required to be interoperability nationwide and two additional types of data
