Looking Forward 2021 (Q1): Data Analytics

Data Analytics Trends to Look Out For

  • Data Science: We’ve seen an explosion of AI/ML capabilities, vendors, algorithms and use cases. It’s important for organizations to keep in mind that these are incredible tools but they are just that, tools. These advancements are only useful in the context of larger organizational goals and with the appropriate data analytics foundation to support their use. Check out our podcast for more tips!
  • Value-Based Care (VBC): VBC isn’t new, but it continues to be a major driver of data requirements. Organizations will need to consider the overlap of their strategic objectives, VBC contractual obligations and optimization of the triple aim to ensure they’re focused on the data, analytics and operational components that will truly help move the needle.
  • Focus on Governance: Many organizations have splintered analytics shops and are looking to establish strong governance practices to unite the enterprise on tools, definitions, processes and systems. Strong cross-team collaboration and stakeholder alignment will be become even more important to get it right. This Tableau article does a nice job defining some key terms to align your organization.

Innovations to Know

  • Machine Learning: As noted above, AI/ML is a major focus right now. Cloud technologies and advancements in computing have enabled rapid development and deployment of machine learning algorithms for varied use cases across the enterprise from clinical care to debt collections. We’ve developed an exciting partnership with Jvion to help more rapidly deploy these technologies to our clients.
  • Ambient Clinical Intelligence: We’re seeing new technologies using Natural Language Processing to “listen” to recorded patient visits and automate clinical documentation. We expect to see more solutions as the need for clinical automation continues.
  • Cloud Migration: Organizations are all over the spectrum in terms of their adoption of cloud data solution – from completely on-prem to full migrations to the cloud – with most organizations falling somewhere in between. While we aren’t seeing consensus at this point, it’s on most everyone’s radar and will require careful strategic planning to determine the right approach.

You Don’t Want to Miss

  • Strategic resourcing to support a segment of healthcare technology that is changing rapidly – finding and keeping the right talent is very difficult.
  • Information Governance vs. Data Governance.
  • Data as an asset.

Upcoming Industry Events

  • Medicare Learning Event: Interoperability and Patient Access Final Rule
    • This event happened on December 9-10, but it’s worth noting given the scale of impact it will have on the industry. If you didn’t tune in, I recommend getting a copy of the slide deck.
